Trizonia Island/Νήσος Τριζόνια

Trizonia island is a little piece of unknown paradise in the Gulf of Corinth. Many Greeks have not heard of this low-profile island. Since it is not a popular travel destination, there were very few foreign tourists and the few visitors were mostly from organized tours in Greece.

Legend has it that, Billionaire shipping tycoon, Aristotle Onassis fell hard for this island, and made a bid to purchase it, but the bid didn’t pass. He then acquried the island of Scorpio in the Ionian sea instead.

The Rio–Antirrio Bridge/Γέφυρα Ρίου–Αντιρρίου

On the other side after about 45 minutes.

The view of the RIo-antirio (also called Charilaos Trikoupis) bridge from aboard a ferry boat are stunning. The remarkable RIo-Antirio bridge is an impressive modern wonder. It was completed the day before the Olympic games in Athens on the 12th of August 2004. It is one of the world’s longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and longest of the fully suspended type. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese peninsula to Antirrio on mainland Greece by road.

It was the vision for the Charilaos Trikoupis (Prime Minister of Greece) had more than a hundred years ago, to connect the narrow sea passage between Rio and Antirrion, became a reality. But, Greece lacked the finances. The bridge was planned in the mid-1990s and was built by French-Greek companies.

Fun fact: The name Rio (and its older form Rhion) derives from the Greek ῥίον (rhion), generally meaning “jutting part”.

Hydra Island Pt3

Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin
The tomb of Lazaros Kountouriotis, a rich sea captain., who gave his entire fortune to support the Greek War of Independence.
A beautiful mosaic of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus.
Ship anchors
The statue of Andreas Miaoulis, admiral during the Greek War of Independence.

My third batch of photographs from the beautiful Saroninc island of Hydra. And island that is located in Greece’s Aegean sea and Argolic gulf.

The only mode of transportation are mules, donkeys and horses instead of cars. Cars and motorcylces are not permitted by law. Making it a very quiet and serene place. It is also an eco-friendly island with recycling bins everywhere.

Hydra is an island well-fortified as we can see from the many canons at the entrance of the port.. The inhabitants had to battles against pirates, and the Ottomans. The citizens suffered various plagues and famines.

A few notable people that have visited the island is Sofia Loren when she filmed ‘Boy on a Dolphin’ released in 1957, and Leonard Cohen who owned a home on the island.

Hydra Island Pt2

No one can jinx these stairs.

The second batch of photographs of the magical island of Hydra featuring the beaches and shops.

Hydra may not have the best beaches like Skiathos and other places in Greece, but the one that I photographed was very beautiful and even though it was full of rocks I enjoyed my swim there.

The shops are very nice, but they are pricey. As it is a cosmopolitan island the food and merchandise can be more expensive than other places in Greece.

Hydra Island Pt1

The port at Metochi in the Peloponnese
All aboard!!
We’re coming!

Porobably the most beautiful port I have ever seen!

Hydra island is a majestic island on of the saronic islands in the Aegean sea. The island got it’s name from the natural springs on the islands as ‘hydra’ in Greek is another word for water.

It is considered a cosmopolitan island, and as soon as our ship came close to the harbour, I could see why. It is a very aristocratic looking island due to the classic architecutal style of the homes on the island.

There were many things to see and do and very little time as it was only a day trip. My camera was very happy though as you can see I had to divide the post in 3 parts.

Hidden Beaches/Κρυφές παραλίες

We’re off to find some hidden beaches!
What an incredible place to live!
We cruised by Evia. The northern region of the island was devastated by fires last August.
Our ocean voyage ends. For now…

On the Skiathos boat cruise we saw many hidden gems. Hidden beach coves that are only accessible by boat as well as caves, and some beautiful homes on top of cliffs.

Koukounaries beach is a very popular beach in Skiathos. It is one of sixty beautiful beaches on the island It has fine white sand and it looks like it has tiny crystals in the water. The beach is surrounded by lush forest with pine cones-which is where the beach got its name. It was voted the most unspoiled beach in the mediterranean.
