Driving Miss Misogyny

This is my last illustration on the subject of ‘internalized misogyny’.

For many years whilst being the co-pilot in other peoples’ cars I have heard many male and female drivers say ‘uggh female driver!’. So I assumed that women must indeed be terrible drivers. Years later after I decided to draw this I did a little research and surprise, surpise according to statistics women are not so bad after all!

First a very sad fact.: Car accidents are the thrid cause of deaths in the world after heart attacks/disease and cancer. Most of the people that pass away are under the age of 34.

According to the W.H.O ‘From a young age, males are more likely to be involved in road traffic crashes than females. About three quarters (73%) of all road traffic deaths occur among young males under the age of 25 years who are almost 3 times as likely to be killed in a road traffic crash as young females.’

According to American statistics: “80% of all car crashes involve male drivers.”

Also, ‘Men are more likely to drive greater distances than women and are more likely to engage in dangerous behavior while behind the wheel, such as drunk driving, distracted driving, and failing to use seat belts.’

Another statistic from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. says that: “Men made up 71%of car accident fatalities over one year, while women only accounted for 29%.-Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The Greek statistics from the University of Piraeus came to the same conclusion. In Greece from 2000-2009 from the 10.439 deaths only 596 of them were women. ‘This is a huge difference in the role of the driver according to their gender.’
