The Battle of Drabala/Η Μάχη της Δραμπάλα
Every year on the 4th of June the Church of Agia Paraskevi in Arcadia commemorates the Battle of Drabala. The Battle took place on June 5th -7 in 1825 in the nearby mountains of Drabala. It was a battle against the Ottoman forces of Ibrahim and the Greek army lead by Theodoros Kolokotronis. It was one of the harshest and deadliest of the battles for independence in Greece.
The commemortion or doxology begins with a church service. Followed by the laying of wreaths by politicians. Then a small theatrical story telling of the events. And then a traditional Greek dance by Arcadian dancers.
My father is from the nearby village of Akovos and he would go to this event every year. Since he is not here with us today, I decided to go after many years in his honour. I think it would have made him very proud.
Κάθε χρόνο στις 4 Ιουνίου ο Ιερός Ναός της Αγίας Παρασκευής Αρκαδίας τιμά την μνήμη των στρατιώτων στη Μάχη της Δράμπαλας. Η Μάχη έγινε στις 5 -7 Ιουνίου 1825 στα βουνά της Ντράμπαλα. Ήταν μια μάχη εναντίον των Οθωμανικών δυνάμεων του Ιμπραήμ και του Ελληνικού στρατού με επικεφαλής τον Θεόδωρο Κολοκοτρώνη. Ήταν μια από τις πιο σκληρές και θανατηφόρες μάχες για την ανεξαρτησία στην Ελλάδα.
Πρώτα γίνεται μνημόσυνο και δοξολογία κατά τη διάρκεια των εκκλησιαστικών ακολουθιών. Επειτα τη κατάθεση στεφάνων από πολιτικούς. Στη συνέχεια μια μικρή θεατρική αφήγηση των γεγονότων. Και μετά παραδοσιακός ελληνικός χορός από Αρκάδες χορευτές.
Ο πατέρας μου καταγόταν από το κοντινό χωριό του Άκοβου, και πήγαινε κάθε χρόνο σε αυτή την εκδήλωση. Επειδή δεν είναι εδώ μαζί μας σήμερα, αποφάσισα να πάω μετά από πολλά χρόνια προς τιμήν του. Νομίζω ότι θα τον έκανε πολύ περήφανο.
Souroti Landscape
Souroti (pronunced sue-ro-ti) is a rural village, located 25 kilometers outside of the Thessaloniki. It’s very famous for it’s mineral water and it’s carbonated water that can be found in all of the supermarkets here in Greece as well as in many markets around the world.
Η Σουρωτή είναι ένα αγροτικό χωριό, που βρίσκεται 25 χιλιόμετρα έξω από τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Είναι πολύ διάσημο για το μεταλλικό του νερό και το ανθρακούχο νερό που μπορεί να βρει κανείς σε όλα τα σούπερ μάρκετ εδώ στην Ελλάδα καθώς και σε πολλές αγορές σε όλο τον κόσμο.
W.H.O Warning
There have been many dire warnings about our health recently. From the W.H.O (The World Health Organization) issued a warning about a future deadly pandemic – ‘Disease X’, that is 70% more deadlier than covid.
Then the W.H.O warned against artificial sweetners, like Sucralose found in Splenda, cause cancer, and damage to Dna.
Then the W.H.O said that very hot drinks can cause esophageal cancer.
Who knows what else we are consuming that in the future will be exposed as dangerous..
Mother Mary the Joy of the Sad people/Παναγία, η Χαρά των Θλιβομένων
The monastery ‘Mother Mary the Joy of the Sad people’ is located in Palaiohori, Halkidiki in Northern Greece. It is not an old monastery as it was built in 1999. Is a monastery for men. People who are in difficult or desperate situations may pray to to Her. There is a special prayer that is read. For example, a mother who is struggling with her drug addicted son may pray to Her for help.
It is by far one of the most beautiful and modest monasteries I have ever been too. The architecture is the most unique and so colourful. The inside feels like a home-a very traditional grandmothers’ home. It was an unexpected visit with the church ladies, but I am glad that I had to the opportunity to visit this beautiful and tranquil place.
Το μοναστήρι «Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο η Χαρά των Θλιμμένων» βρίσκεται στο Παλαιοχώρι Χαλκιδικής στη Βόρεια Ελλάδα. Δεν είναι παλιό μοναστήρι καθώς χτίστηκε το 1999. Είναι ανδρικό μοναστήρι. Οι άνθρωποι που βρίσκονται σε δύσκολες ή απελπισμένες καταστάσεις μπορεί να προσευχηθούν σε Εκείνη. Υπάρχει μια ειδική προσευχή που διαβάζεται. Για παράδειγμα, μια μητέρα που παλεύει με τον εθισμένο στα ναρκωτικά γιο της μπορεί να προσευχηθεί σε Εκείνη για βοήθεια.
Είναι μακράν ένα από τα πιο όμορφα και σεμνά μοναστήρια που έχω πάει ποτέ. Η αρχιτεκτονική είναι η πιο μοναδική και τόσο πολύχρωμη. Το εσωτερικό μοιάζει με ένα σπίτι σαν ένα πολύ παραδοσιακό σπίτι γιαγιάδων. Ήταν μια απροσδόκητη επίσκεψη με τις κυρίες της εκκλησίας, αλλά χαίρομαι που είχα την ευκαιρία να επισκεφτώ αυτό το όμορφο και ήρεμο μέρος.

It has a spot on UNESCO’s World Heritage list for its beautiful nature as much of Mount Athos is covered with mixed broadleaf deciduous and evergreen forests. Also, for the impressive architecuture of the monasteries.
Mount Athos, has a wide influence in the Orthodox world, as it has been a spiritual center for many centuries. It influences an extensive areas from the Balkans to Russia, from Arizona, USA to England, Finland and Africa.
The Holy Mountain has the largest collection of Greek manuscripts in the world. The largest collection of portable icons in the world. The largest collection of Ottoman documents outside Turkey. The largest collection of Russian documents outside of Russia, and the largest collection of Romanian documents outside of Romania etc..
Το Άγιο Όρος, βρίσκεται στο ανατολικότερο τμήμα της ευρύτερης χερσονήσου της Χαλκιδικής στην κεντρική Μακεδονία. Είναι το κέντρο του Ανατολικού Ορθόδοξου Μοναχισμού. Έχει μια θέση στον κατάλογο της Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO για την όμορφη φύση του, καθώς μεγάλο μέρος του Αγίου Όρους καλύπτεται από μικτά πλατύφυλλα φυλλοβόλα και αειθαλή δάση.
