Skiathos Island/Σκιάθος

Skiathos is a huge and beautiful cosmopolitan island in the Northern Sporades. It is has nice lush green trees which I love as I don’t like dry, arid islands and other places. The town of skiathos has nice, clean and newly renovated shops. Many were so unique and creative. It was bustling with people that day as Greece has had a huge influx of tourists this year; about a million each week!

I wish I could have stayed longer to explore the island and see the famous tiny airport runway, but we had a very famous beach to get to..

Η Σκιάθος είναι ένα τεράστιο και όμορφο κοσμοπολίτικο νησί στις Βόρειες Σποράδες. Έχει ωραία καταπράσινα δέντρα που μου αρέσουν καθώς δεν μου αρέσουν τα ξερά, άνυδρα νησιά και άλλα μέρη. Η πόλη της Σκιάθου έχει ωραία, καθαρά και πρόσφατα ανακαινισμένα καταστήματα. Πολλά ήταν τόσο μοναδικά και δημιουργικά. Ήταν πολύ κόσμος εκείνη την ημέρα, καθώς η Ελλάδα είχε μια τεράστια εισροή τουριστών φέτος. περίπου ένα εκατομμύριο κάθε εβδομάδα!

Μακάρι να μπορούσα να είχα μείνει περισσότερο για να εξερευνήσω το νησί και να δω τον διάσημο μικροσκοπικό διάδρομο του αεροδρομίου, αλλά είχαμε μια πολύ διάσημη παραλία να επισκεφτούμε..

Traveling on the cruise ship Elizabet to skiathos was an incredible and memorable experience. It was like a dream… Beaches can sometimes be forgetable, but not this boat ride! The captain pulled out all of the stops and provided the entertainment. He played music from every country that the passengers were from. He danced the sirtaki and event gave them Greek dance lessons. This was a party boat! I wasn’t expecting this at all. It was nice to see people from various countries dancing together in unity. And with covid, fire and inflation free thoughts. Just good summer fun!

Το ταξίδι με το κρουαζιερόπλοιο Elizabet στη Σκιάθο ήταν μια απίστευτη και αξέχαστη εμπειρία. Ήταν σαν ένα όνειρο… Οι παραλίες μπορεί μερικές φορές να ξεχαστούν, αλλά όχι αυτή η βόλτα με το σκάφος! Ο καπετάνιος έβγαλε όλες τις στάσεις και παρείχε τη διασκέδαση. Έπαιζε μουσική από κάθε χώρα από την οποία ήταν οι επιβάτες. Χόρεψε το συρτάκι και τους έκανε ακόμη και μαθήματα ελληνικού χορού. Αυτό ήταν ένα καράβι για πάρτι! Δεν το περίμενα καθόλου αυτό. Ήταν ωραίο να βλέπεις ανθρώπους από διάφορες χώρες να χορεύουν μαζί ενωμένοι. Και με σκέψεις χωρίς Covid, φωτιά και πληθωρισμό. Απλά καλή καλοκαιρινή διασκέδαση!

Nea Anchialos Bay/Νέα Αγχιάλου

The bay of Nea Anchialos is south west of the town of Volos in the municipality of Magnesia. It is a picturesque little bay. I would have like to have stayed longer, but this is where we had to board the cruise ship Elizabet to Skitathos. Where an adventure was waiting for as, as well as a fun boat road that I will never forget!

Ο όρμος της Νέας Αγχιάλου βρίσκεται νοτιοδυτικά της πόλης του Βόλου του δήμου Μαγνησίας. Είναι ένας γραφικός μικρός κόλπος. Θα ήθελα να είχα μείνει περισσότερο, αλλά εδώ έπρεπε να επιβιβαστούμε στο κρουαζιερόπλοιο Elizabet για τη Σκιάθο. Εκεί που μας περίμενε μια περιπέτεια καθώς και μια διασκεδαστική βόλτα με το σκάφος που δεν θα ξεχάσω ποτέ!

Μακρινίτσα/Makrinitsa Village

The village of Makrinitsa also called ‘the balcony of Pelion’ as the village is built on the side of Pelios Mountain. It’s highest point is 700 meters and its lowest is 350 meters.

Το χωριό της Μακρινίτσας ονομάζεται και «μπαλκόνι του Πηλίου», καθώς το χωριό είναι χτισμένο στην πλαγιά του Πηλίου. Το υψηλότερο σημείο του είναι 700 μέτρα και το χαμηλότερο είναι 350 μέτρα.

The village shops are full of a variety of botanicals, honey, soap and souvenirs.

Τα καταστήματα του χωριού είναι γεμάτα με ποικιλία βοτανικών, μελιού, σαπουνιού και αναμνηστικών.

It was known as the ‘noble village’ as it was mostly inhabited by wealthy people. THe homes are beautiful and covered in stone. There are cafes and a Byzantine folk museum. It is well worth the visit and so lovely you will not want to leave.

Ήταν γνωστό ως το «ευγενές χωριό» καθώς κατοικούνταν κυρίως από πλούσιους ανθρώπους. Τα σπίτια είναι όμορφα και καλυμμένα με πέτρα. Υπάρχουν καφενεία και βυζαντινό λαογραφικό μουσείο. Αξίζει την επίσκεψη και είναι τόσο υπέροχο που δεν θα θέλετε να φύγετε.

Battleship Averof

The Greek battleship ‘Averof’ is docked at the bay of Palaio Faliro. It has a long and extensive history.

It was built in Italy and sold to the Hellenic Navy in 1909. The estate of George Averoff donated a third of the sume to purchase the ship. The 10,000-ton armoured cruiser boasted the most modern weaponry of its time. The Averof participated in the victorious naval battles of Elli in 1912 and Limnos in the beginning of 1913, during the Balkan War.

Everyone knows how expensive Mykonos can be. It has become a bit of a joke. It is most certainly not a place that most Greeks can afford to go to which is a bit shameful.

And, yes I have heard that a beach chair can cost you about a thousand euros. Crazy!

Όλοι ξέρουν πόσο ακριβή μπορεί να είναι η Μύκονος. Έχει γίνει λίγο αστείο. Σίγουρα δεν είναι ένα μέρος που οι περισσότεροι Έλληνες μπορούν να αντέξουν οικονομικά να πάνε, κάτι που είναι λίγο ντροπιαστικό

Και, ναι, έχω ακούσει ότι μια ξαπλώστρα μπορεί να σου κοστίσει περίπου χίλια ευρώ. Τρελά!
