Have a Seat/Κάθισε Παρακαλώ

A quick escape from the hustle and bustle of Athens to the northeastern Attica region. A drive down a mountainous road through villages and by chance we come across Barnabas beach.

We poke our feet in the crystal clear waters. But, we are not here for a swim, thank goodness, cause the water is freezing, So we hunker down at a fish tavern and are served fresh, delicious fish. We eat with a view of the beach with its clean blue waters. And that’s really all you need. You don’t need to travel luxuriously to enjoy Greece.

Μια γρήγορη απόδραση από τη φασαρία της Αθήνας στη βορειοανατολική περιοχή της Αττικής. Μια διαδρομή με το αυτοκίνητο σε έναν ορεινό δρόμο μέσα από χωριά και τυχαία συναντάμε την παραλία Βαρνάβα.

Χώνουμε τα πόδια μας στα κρυστάλλινα νερά. Αλλά, δεν είμαστε εδώ για μπάνιο, δόξα τω Θεώ, γιατί κάνει πολύ κρύο. Έτσι, βολευόμαστε σε μια ψαροταβέρνα και μας σερβίρουν φρέσκο, νόστιμο ψάρι. Τρώμε με θέα την παραλία με τα καθαρά γαλάζια νερά της. Και αυτό είναι πραγματικά ό,τι χρειάζεστε. Δεν χρειάζεται να ταξιδέψετε πολυτελώς για να απολαύσετε την Ελλάδα….

Beautiful Beaches

August is a crazy month to travel anywhere in Greece. Most Greeks leave Athens during this month for vacation. The country basically almost shuts down.

The beaches were packed in Kithira, and the waves at on beach were too high for swimming. The winds were near gale force. So, you had to travel to the other side of the island were it wasn’t so windy.

The water was crystal clear.

This beach on the island of Kithira was not easy to reach. As the first picture shows the steps were endless. A few people saw the steps and turned back. There is a food truck at the top, and there is a sign warning people to stock up before venturing down the steps.

One hike up and down in the searing heat is enough for the day. I survived and lived to tell the tale..

Αυτή η παραλία στο νησί των Κυθήρων δεν ήταν εύκολα προσβάσιμη. Όπως φαίνεται στην πρώτη φωτογραφία, τα σκαλιά ήταν ατελείωτα. Μερικοί άνθρωποι είδαν τα σκαλιά και γύρισαν πίσω. Υπάρχει μια καντίνα στην κορυφή και μια πινακίδα που προειδοποιεί τους ανθρώπους να εφοδιαστούν πριν κατέβουν τα σκαλιά.

Μια πεζοπορία πάνω-κάτω στην καυτή ζέστη είναι αρκετή για όλη τη μέρα. Επέζησα και έζησα για να πω την ιστορία.

Volcanic Rocks/Ηφαιστειογενή Βράχια

These islands in Lichadonisia are the result of volcanic activity. Some parts of the beaches are covered in black volcanic rock. Some of the islands were submerged during a great earthquake in 426 BC.

The whole beach was not like this. It was just one side. Very cool to see this, especially anyone who is a geology and or volcanology enthusiast.

Αυτά τα νησιά είναι αποτέλεσμα ηφαιστειακής δραστηριότητας. Ορισμένα σημεία των παραλιών στα Λιχαδονήσια είναι καλυμμένα με μαύρα ηφαιστειογενή Βράχια. Μερικά από τα νησιά βυθίστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια ενός μεγάλου σεισμού το 426 π.Χ.

Όλη η παραλία δεν ήταν έτσι, ηταν μόνο η μία πλευρά. Πολύ ωραίο να το δεις αυτό, ειδικά όποιος είναι λάτρης της γεωλογίας η και ηφαιστειολογίας.

Lichadonisia pt2/Λιχαδονήσια Μέρος 2ος

A beach bar and eatery

The name of the location ‘Lichadonisia’- pronounced (lee-ha-don-isia) is derived from Greek mythology. Lichas was the servant of Heracles (Hercules) who brought a poisoned lion-skinned garment from Deianira (Heracles’ wife) to Heracles. Deianira was trying to kill Heracles as she was jealous of his new love interest Iole. As as a punishment Heracles threw Lichas into the sea where Lichadonisa is located.

The location consists of seven islands and islets. There is a shipwreck from the 1940’s and I saw some seals splashing around. The biggest island, Manolia has a beautiful beach and is visited by many tourists in the summer. The waters are clear and shallow and there is a beach bar and small sandwich shop. Overall, the cruise was a lot of fun, I enjoyed my time there, even though it was a full beach.

Το όνομα της τοποθεσίας «Λιχαδονήσια» προέρχεται από την ελληνική μυθολογία. Ο Λίχας ήταν ο υπηρέτης του Ηρακλή που έφερε στον Ηρακλή ένα δηλητηριασμένο χιτώνα απο δέρμα λιονταριού από τη Δηιάνειρα (σύζυγος του Ηρακλή). Η Δηιάνειρα προσπαθούσε να σκοτώσει τον Ηρακλή καθώς ζήλευε το νέο του έρωτα Ιόλη. Ως τιμωρία ο Ηρακλής πέταξε τον Λίχα στη θάλασσα όπου βρίσκονται τα Λιχαδόνησα.

Η τοποθεσία αποτελείται από επτά νησιά και βραχονησίδες. Υπάρχει ένα ναυάγιο από τη δεκαετία του 1940 και είδα μερικές φώκιες να πιτσιλίζουν τριγύρω. Το μεγαλύτερο νησί, η Μανωλιά, έχει μια όμορφη παραλία και το επισκέπτονται πολλοί τουρίστες το καλοκαίρι. Τα νερά είναι καθαρά και ρηχά και υπάρχει και ενα μπιτς μπαρ που σερβίρει φαγητό. Η κρουαζιέρα ήταν πολύ διασκεδαστική, απόλαυσα τον χρόνο μου εκεί, παρόλο που ήταν μια γεμάτη παραλία.

Astros Beach/Παραλίου Άστρους

Astros beach in Kinouria, Arcadia It has a 14 km long coast line, a nice sandy beach, clean waters and tavernas.

I payed a visit right before the major heatwaves and catastrophic fires in July.

Παραλία Άστρους Κυνουρίας Αρκαδίας Διαθέτει ακτογραμμή μήκους 14 χιλιομέτρων, ωραία αμμουδιά, καθαρά νερά και ταβέρνες. Έκανα μια επίσκεψη ακριβώς πριν από τους μεγάλους καύσωνες και τις καταστροφικές πυρκαγιές τον Ιούλιο.

Quiet Beach/Ησυχη Παραλια

I’ve always preferred beaches that were quiet and had as little people as possible. This summer, due to the pandemic, a quiet beach is a a must 🙂

Πάντα προτιμούσα παραλίες που ήταν ήσυχες και είχαν πολύ λίγα άτομα. Αυτό το καλοκαίρι, λόγω της πανδημίας, μια ήσυχη παραλία είναι απαραίτητη 🙂
