Varibobi Fires (Athens wildfires)

A terrible disaster unfolded yesterday in the north east area of Athens. It is an area with a beautiful forest. The ‘lungs of Athens’ as it is called. In Greece we have wildfires every summer and we’ve had numerous fires this summer, but the Varibobi fire is huge and unusual. The area is a refuge for those living in the concrete jungle and who want to quickly escape the city.

This summer has been an unprecdented hot one for Greece. We are into our second heatwave of the summer and yesterday was the 7th day of the heatwave with temperatures reaching a high of 47° C in some regions. We couldn’t go outside because it is just unbearably hot, and we are advised not to. Heat exhaustion and/or sun stroke are things that you don’t want to ever experience.

The southern Meditteranean is suffering from excessive heat and fires everything made worse by climate change. I am afraid that it is only going to get worse if the worlds’ (corrupt) leaders don’t finally take REAL and DRASTIC measures.

Varibobi the following day

Other areas of Greece suffering from wildfires include Elia (where the town of Ancient Olympia is located), Northern Evia (biblical catatastrophe), Messinia, Arcadia.

The air quality in Athens is so terrible we are advised to stay in doors. And it is ‘raining’ ashes.

Pray for Greece and the whole world, because I’m afraid that wrath of mother nature is not over.

Big Butterfly/Μεγαλη Πεταλουδα

A big butterfly-the largest I’ve ever seen- landed in my garden yesterday.

Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” -Nathaniel Hawthorne

Strawberry Supermoon

Yesterdays’ strawberry supermoon is the last supermoon of 2021, and the first full moon of the summer. It is named the strawberry moon because it coincides with the strawberry harvesting season.

The moon was too far away. I needed a larger lens or a telescope to capture a clearer shot! It was still pretty from a distance though.

My strawberries are looking great and they taste delicious too. They need a lot of water and are persevering with the crazy, hot Greek heat.

Beauty in the Minor Things

Happy new month!

I’m feeling a lot better. My arm has improved just in time because I have new creative ideas. You can’t stop me world!!

The world can be a very negative place and sometimes you can get caught up in it’s negativity. I think it’s crucial, for the sake of inner peace, to tune out some times and get closer to nature. And just notice even the small beautiful things that we normally don’t pay attention too.

When you are more peaceful inside you see a lot clearer and you do attract better things into your life. And you are much more equipped to handle anything that may come your way. 🙂

I love the sunny gazania flower, and I make sure to add it to my garden every year. It is native to South Africa and is named after the 15th century Greek-Italian scholar Theodorus of Gaza. It needs full sun and can handle drought conditions-perfect for Athenian summers and is very low maintenance.

No Restrictions/Χωρίς περιορισμούς

The lock down measures are slowly lifting in Greece and the rest of Europe. The cases are still high though so we are not out of the clear yet. People are understandably restless after a year of lock downs, but caution is still needed.

So in the time of loosening of restrictions I found the perfect time to fracture my right shoulder after a terrible fall. It’s been a week and I feel that I will have speedy recovery. As a result of my accident I wasn’t able to take the photographs that I would normally take this time of year. I will be publishing photographs that I have on file ready to be published.

In this terrible time of fear, negativity, sickness, and anger etc. etc. Ignore the naysayers and fearmongers and stay positive, take care of yourselves and believe in your recovery (whatever may be ailing you) and in the future. 🙂

Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, we get stronger and more resilient.”-Dr Steve Maraboli

Thorns/Αγκάθια

“Life is thickly sown with thorns, and I know no other remedy than to pass quickly through them. The longer we dwell on our misfortunes, the greater is their power to harm us”. -Voltaire

-Voltaire
