Panagia Kapnikarea Church

A photograph of the entrance to the Greek Orthodox church of Panagia Kapnikarea. The Byzantine church is estimated to have been build in the 11th Century.

It was built over a temple dedicated to either the godess Athena or Demetra, It is located in the middle of a very busy shopping district called Ermou.

Μια φωτογραφία της εισόδου της ελληνορθόδοξης εκκλησίας της Παναγίας Καπνικαρέας. Η βυζαντινή εκκλησία εκτιμάται ότι χτίστηκε τον 11ο αιώνα.

Χτίστηκε πάνω σε έναν ναό αφιερωμένο είτε στη θεά Αθηνά είτε στη Δήμητρα. Βρίσκεται στη μέση μιας πολύ πολυσύχναστης εμπορικής περιοχής που ονομάζεται Ερμού.

Old Parliament/Παλαιά Βουλή

A black and white image of the neoclassical old parliament building in Athens, which is located on Stadiou Street. It is now the National History Museum, which I have photographed in the past.

The poster in the background reads ‘Cyprus 74 I will not forget’. In 1974 the Turks invaded the island of Cyprus and till this day occupies the northern tip of the island.

Ασπρόμαυρη εικόνα του νεοκλασικού παλιού κοινοβουλίου στην Αθήνα, το οποίο βρίσκεται στην οδό Σταδίου. Τώρα είναι το Εθνικό Ιστορικό Μουσείο, το οποιο έχω φωτογραφίσει στο παρελθόν.

Η αφίσα στο βάθος γράφει «Κύπρος 74 Δεν ξεχνώ». Το 1974 οι Τούρκοι εισέβαλαν στο νησί της Κύπρου και μέχρι σήμερα καταλαμβάνει το βόρειο άκρο του νησιού.

Kastania Village

Chestnut tree.

Kastania is a village in Stymfalia in Corinth in the Peloponnese. The little stone cobbled streets and homes take you back in time. Rose bushes and giant cabbages grow in the gardens of the homes. Chestnut trees line the roads in the village, which is most likely the reason the villag was named ‘Kastania’ means chestnut in Greek.

Parallel Universe/Παραλληλο Συμπαν

Cassandra/Κασσανδρα

The woman on the left of the mural reminds me of Cassandra from Greek mythology. Cassandra was the daughter of the Trojan King Priam and Queen Hecuba. The God Apollo gave her the gift of prophecy, but when she refused to sleep with him he cursed her. The curse was that no one would believe her prophecies.

Η γυναίκα στα αριστερά της τοιχογραφίας μου θυμίζει την Κασσάνδρα από την Ελληνική μυθολογία. Η Κασσάνδρα ήταν κόρη του Τρώα βασιλιά Πρίαμου και της βασίλισσας Εκάβης. Ο Θεός Απόλλωνας της έδωσε το δώρο της προφητείας, αλλά όταν αρνήθηκε να κοιμηθεί μαζί του την καταράστηκε. Η κατάρα ήταν ότι κανείς δεν θα πίστευε τις προφητείες της
