The National Library of Greece is a beautiful neo-classical building that is located on Panepistimiou Street in the downtown area of Athens. It was founded in 1832 by Ioannis Kapodistrias, a distinguised Greek statesman. A philhellene named Johann Jacob Mayer came up with the idea for the library. He had crusaded for Greece’s independence along with Lord Byron.

The building was financed by Vallianos brothers from the Ionian island of Kefalonia. It was designed by Baron Theophil von Hansen and its construction supervised by Ernst Ziller.

In 2018, the library was relocated due to the lack of space and demands for new technology. The bulk of the library is housed in the new 22,000-square meter building at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on the Phaleron Bay South of Athens.

Η Εθνική Βιβλιοθήκη της Ελλάδος είναι ένα όμορφο νεοκλασικό κτίριο που βρίσκεται στην οδό Πανεπιστημίου στο κέντρο της Αθήνας. Ιδρύθηκε το 1832 από τον Ιωάννη Καποδίστρια. Ένας φιλέλληνας ονόματι Johann Jacob Mayer είχε την ιδέα για τη βιβλιοθήκη. Είχε σταυροφορήσει για την ανεξαρτησία της Ελλάδας μαζί με τον Λόρδο Βύρωνα.

Το κτίριο χρηματοδοτήθηκε από τους αδελφούς Βαλλιάνου από τη Κεφαλονιά. Σχεδιάστηκε από τον βαρόνο Theophil von Hansen και την κατασκευή του επιμελήθηκε ο Ernst Ziller.

Το 2018, η βιβλιοθήκη μεταφέρθηκε λόγω έλλειψης χώρου και απαιτήσεων για νέα τεχνολογία. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της βιβλιοθήκης στεγάζεται στο νέο κτίριο 22.000 τετραγωνικών μέτρων στο Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος στον κόλπο Φαλήρου νότια της Αθήνας.

Merry Christmas! Καλα Χριστουγεννα!

Abandoned /Εγκαταλειμμενο

What must have been in its hey-day a beautiful neo-classical building on a corner of a neighbourhood downtown, now lays abandoned. It’s in a prime location downtown near the Acropolis. One could bet that the heirs cannot agree on what to do with the property. It of course is not the only home like this, but this one really had some ‘good bones.’

Αυτό που πρέπει να ήταν στην εποχή της ακμής του ένα όμορφο νεοκλασικό κτίριο σε μια γωνιά μιας γειτονιάς στο κέντρο της πόλης, τώρα βρίσκεται εγκαταλελειμμένο. Βρίσκεται σε προνομιακή τοποθεσία στο κέντρο της πόλης κοντά στην Ακρόπολη. Θα μπορούσε κανείς να στοιχηματίσει ότι οι κληρονόμοι δεν μπορούν να συμφωνήσουν για το τι να κάνουν με το ακίνητο. Φυσικά δεν είναι το μόνο σπίτι σαν αυτό, αλλά αυτό είχε πραγματικά κάποια «καλά κόκαλα».

Athens By Night/Η Νυχτερινή Αθήνα

Another batch of photographs from the same city square as the previous post, but at night. I think Athens looks a lot more beautiful at night with all of the Christmas lights.

Άλλη μια παρτίδα φωτογραφιών από την ίδια πλατεία της πόλης με την προηγούμενη ανάρτηση, αλλά τη νύχτα. Νομίζω ότι η Αθήνα φαίνεται πολύ πιο όμορφη τη νύχτα με όλα τα χριστουγεννιάτικα φώτα.

Athens By Day/Η Αθηνα την Ημερα

My street photographs of downtown Athens, and Syndagma square taken on a moody, overcast day in December. The Christmas tree was not too impressive as you can see in the photograph. The decor is a lot more simplier this year than other years.

But, the city looks very beautiful with lit Christmas lights at night as you will see in my next post.

Οι φωτογραφίες του δρόμου μου από το κέντρο της Αθήνας και την πλατεία Συντάγματος τραβηγμένες μια κυκλοθυμική, συννεφιασμένη μέρα του Δεκεμβρίου. Το χριστουγεννιάτικο δέντρο δεν ήταν και πολύ εντυπωσιακό όπως μπορείτε να δείτε στη φωτογραφία. Η διακόσμηση είναι πολύ πιο απλή φέτος από άλλες χρονιές.

Όμως, η πόλη φαίνεται πολύ όμορφη με αναμμένα χριστουγεννιάτικα λαμπάκια το βράδυ όπως θα δείτε στην επόμενη ανάρτησή μου.

Omonia Square

Omonia square is a busy imtersection at the heart of the main roads of the city of Athens. Omonia is Greek for harmony, reflecting the informal political truce declared here in 1862 by the leaders of rival political parties in the wake of King Otto’s ousting.

It is one of the most grittiest neighbourhoods of the city, and admittedly not the prettiest. Run down buildings, crime, refugees, drug addicts and homeless people have tarnished the reputation of the area.

Some buildings should be demolished and a revitalization plan needs to be implemented, but unfortunately that is not up to me.

However, there have been some efforts to improve the area or a small portion of it. In May 2020 the squares’ new design was revealed and the fountain was restored with its 188 jets and 177 underwater spotlights built with eco-friendly materials and cool pavement technologies.

It is my hope that one day the Greek government will one day soon put the same amount of vision, work and funds, that has been put into the Athens Riviera and Hellenikon, as the neglected urban parts of Athens.
