Abandoned /Εγκαταλειμμενο

What must have been in its hey-day a beautiful neo-classical building on a corner of a neighbourhood downtown, now lays abandoned. It’s in a prime location downtown near the Acropolis. One could bet that the heirs cannot agree on what to do with the property. It of course is not the only home like this, but this one really had some ‘good bones.’

Αυτό που πρέπει να ήταν στην εποχή της ακμής του ένα όμορφο νεοκλασικό κτίριο σε μια γωνιά μιας γειτονιάς στο κέντρο της πόλης, τώρα βρίσκεται εγκαταλελειμμένο. Βρίσκεται σε προνομιακή τοποθεσία στο κέντρο της πόλης κοντά στην Ακρόπολη. Θα μπορούσε κανείς να στοιχηματίσει ότι οι κληρονόμοι δεν μπορούν να συμφωνήσουν για το τι να κάνουν με το ακίνητο. Φυσικά δεν είναι το μόνο σπίτι σαν αυτό, αλλά αυτό είχε πραγματικά κάποια «καλά κόκαλα».

Cassandra/Κασσανδρα

The woman on the left of the mural reminds me of Cassandra from Greek mythology. Cassandra was the daughter of the Trojan King Priam and Queen Hecuba. The God Apollo gave her the gift of prophecy, but when she refused to sleep with him he cursed her. The curse was that no one would believe her prophecies.

Η γυναίκα στα αριστερά της τοιχογραφίας μου θυμίζει την Κασσάνδρα από την Ελληνική μυθολογία. Η Κασσάνδρα ήταν κόρη του Τρώα βασιλιά Πρίαμου και της βασίλισσας Εκάβης. Ο Θεός Απόλλωνας της έδωσε το δώρο της προφητείας, αλλά όταν αρνήθηκε να κοιμηθεί μαζί του την καταράστηκε. Η κατάρα ήταν ότι κανείς δεν θα πίστευε τις προφητείες της

Ναός της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής/Church of the ‘Life giving fountain’

The church of ‘Zoodóchou Pigís’ or ‘Life giving fountain’ in English is built over a cave. It is located in Kefalari, Argolis in the Peloponnese.

It has a long and fascinating history. It was built in 1634 A.D close to where the icon of the Virgin Mary was found. However, in May 18, 1918 the church was destroyed when ammunition stored in military depots nearby exploded. The explosion was so powerful that 45 people lost their lives. The church that we see today was completed in 1928.

During the Nazi occupation of Greece the Nazis wanted to use the church to build an anti-aircraft artillery on the roof of the church. However, after the intervention of the priest Constantinos Papadimitriou to the German commander Dassinger, the construction of the artillery was prevented.

The cave was even used as a secret school to educate Greek children during the Ottoman empire.

Η εκκλησία της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής είναι χτισμένη πάνω από μια σπηλιά. Βρίσκεται στο Κεφαλάρι Αργολίδας στην Πελοπόννησο.

Έχει μια μακρά και συναρπαστική ιστορία. Χτίστηκε το 1634 μ.Χ. κοντά στο σημείο που βρέθηκε η εικόνα της Παναγίας. Ωστόσο, στις 18 Μαΐου 1918 η εκκλησία καταστράφηκε όταν πυρομαχικά που ήταν αποθηκευμένα σε στρατιωτικές αποθήκες κοντά εξερράγησαν. Η έκρηξη ήταν τόσο ισχυρή που 45 άνθρωποι έχασαν τη ζωή τους. Η εκκλησία που βλέπουμε σήμερα ολοκληρώθηκε το 1928.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της ναζιστικής κατοχής στην Ελλάδα οι Ναζί ήθελαν να χρησιμοποιήσουν την εκκλησία για να κατασκευάσουν ένα αντιαεροπορικό πυροβολικό στην οροφή της εκκλησίας. Ωστόσο, μετά από παρέμβαση του ιερέα Κωνσταντίνου Παπαδημητρίου στον Γερμανό διοικητή Ντασίντζερ, η κατασκευή του πυροβολικού αποτράπηκε.

Το σπήλαιο χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως κρυφό σχολειό για την εκπαίδευση των Ελλήνων κατά την Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία.

Arvanitia Beach/Παραλία Αρβανιτιά

After a day of strolling through the cobble stone streets of Nafplio a dip in cool waters was a must. Nearby Nafplio is ‘Arvanitia beach’. It is a short, small beach with lots of rocks and fish that love to bite swimmers feet. Plenty of screams were heard that day. At least it wasn’t a shark. Luckily I got out before the waters got choppy and too rough for even the best swimmers to swim in.

Μετά από μια μέρα βόλτας στα πλακόστρωτα δρομάκια του Ναυπλίου μια βουτιά σε δροσερά νερά ήταν απαραίτητη. Κοντά στο Ναύπλιο βρίσκεται η «παραλία Αρβανιτιάς». Είναι μια μικρή, μικρή παραλία με πολλά βράχια και ψάρια που λατρεύουν να δαγκώνουν τα πόδια των κολυμβητών. Ακούστηκαν πολλές κραυγές εκείνη τη μέρα, καλά, τουλάχιστον δεν ήταν καρχαρίας! Ευτυχώς, βγήκα πριν τα νερά ταραγούν και ήταν πολύ τραχιά για να κολυμπήσουν ακόμη και οι καλύτεροι κολυμβητές.

Old Town of Nafplio

The town is architecturally influenced by the Franks, Venetians and Turks. On the right is a Mosque.

Nafplio is a sea side city on the coast of the Peloponnese, it is the capital of Argolis. It is was modern Greece’s first capital from 1823 and 1834. The Venetians called it ‘the Naples of the East’.

It is beautiful and romantic. There is the old town and the newer town right next to it. It is surrounded by fortresses. From Bourtzi to Palamidi fortress with its 999 steps. This is where the famous hero of the Greek Revolution Theodore Kolokotronis had been imprisoned.

There are neoclassical buildings and Venetian style buildings with pretty side streets and creatively decorated shops. There are museums such as the Archaeological Museum with important artifacts from the Prehistoric and Mycenaean Era.

Το Ναύπλιο είναι παραθαλάσσια πόλη στην ακτή της Πελοποννήσου, είναι η πρωτεύουσα της Αργολίδας. Ήταν η πρώτη πρωτεύουσα της σύγχρονης Ελλάδας από το 1823 και το 1834. Οι Ενετοί την αποκαλούσαν «Νάπολη της Ανατολής».

Είναι όμορφο και ρομαντικό. Υπάρχει η παλιά πόλη και η νεότερη πόλη ακριβώς δίπλα της. Περιβάλλεται από φρούρια. Από το Μπούρτζι στο Παλαμήδι με τα 999 σκαλοπάτια. Εδώ είχε φυλακιστεί ο διάσημος ήρωας της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης Θεόδωρος Κολοκοτρώνης.

Υπάρχουν νεοκλασικά κτίρια και κτίρια βενετσιάνικου στυλ με όμορφους παράδρομους και δημιουργικά διακοσμημένα καταστήματα. Υπάρχουν μουσεία όπως το Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο με σημαντικά ευρήματα από την Προϊστορική και Μυκηναϊκή Εποχή.

Alien Disclosure

What a perfect time for alien disclosure. Whether you believe in them or not. The ‘truth’ has come out-well it’s has been coming out for years- but it has definiety hit a cresendo lately. And, well while most people are not panicking, or losing their minds over it, and there are no mass suicides either over the aliens. Just an indifferent, blasé attitude. People are too busy losing their homes due to environmental catastrophes, or being angry over inflation, or distracted by technology etc. and preoccupied by their many problems.

Aliens are just not a priority I guess..

LIFE IS DEADLY/Η ΖΩΗ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΘΑΝΑΤΗΦΟΡΑ

A few weeks ago I made this drawing. I wasn’t in a very pessimistic mood and didn’t know why I drew it. Than fastforward to September 5ΤΗ and Storm Daniel pummels Greece. The most rainfall I have every witness in Athens and a disatrous flooding for Thessalia region in the North. On the news I saw images of people being transported by tractors through the flood waters. Greece’s agriculture has been devasted and set back many years. Thessalia, which I had visited earlier this year, has the most flat lands in Greece. Greece is a very mountainous country, and most of the land is not very fertile. Thessalia produces most of Greece’s wheat, and they grow cotton and apples as well as other produce.

It is devastting to see lives destroyed, houses submerged in water and the death toll rising. In addition to all of the livestock that have drowned in the flood.. it is all very heartbreaking

This year has been a dreadful year full of deadly accidents and natural disasters. From deadly earthquakes in Turkey to Morocco to deadly storms all over the world and one specific storm-storm Daniel has, shockingly, taken thousands of lives in Libya.

Humanity is most definetly at a strange and scary crossroads. Is it the end? Well it was for many of those who didn’t survive and for the rest of us who are still here..well it sure feels like it.
