Parallel Universe/Παραλληλο Συμπαν

Abandoned /Εγκαταλειμμενο

What must have been in its hey-day a beautiful neo-classical building on a corner of a neighbourhood downtown, now lays abandoned. It’s in a prime location downtown near the Acropolis. One could bet that the heirs cannot agree on what to do with the property. It of course is not the only home like this, but this one really had some ‘good bones.’

Αυτό που πρέπει να ήταν στην εποχή της ακμής του ένα όμορφο νεοκλασικό κτίριο σε μια γωνιά μιας γειτονιάς στο κέντρο της πόλης, τώρα βρίσκεται εγκαταλελειμμένο. Βρίσκεται σε προνομιακή τοποθεσία στο κέντρο της πόλης κοντά στην Ακρόπολη. Θα μπορούσε κανείς να στοιχηματίσει ότι οι κληρονόμοι δεν μπορούν να συμφωνήσουν για το τι να κάνουν με το ακίνητο. Φυσικά δεν είναι το μόνο σπίτι σαν αυτό, αλλά αυτό είχε πραγματικά κάποια «καλά κόκαλα».

Cassandra/Κασσανδρα

The woman on the left of the mural reminds me of Cassandra from Greek mythology. Cassandra was the daughter of the Trojan King Priam and Queen Hecuba. The God Apollo gave her the gift of prophecy, but when she refused to sleep with him he cursed her. The curse was that no one would believe her prophecies.

Η γυναίκα στα αριστερά της τοιχογραφίας μου θυμίζει την Κασσάνδρα από την Ελληνική μυθολογία. Η Κασσάνδρα ήταν κόρη του Τρώα βασιλιά Πρίαμου και της βασίλισσας Εκάβης. Ο Θεός Απόλλωνας της έδωσε το δώρο της προφητείας, αλλά όταν αρνήθηκε να κοιμηθεί μαζί του την καταράστηκε. Η κατάρα ήταν ότι κανείς δεν θα πίστευε τις προφητείες της

The Law of (Attraction) Deceit?

The concept of the law of attraction is that like attracts like and that we create our reality through our thoughts.

The roots of this ‘law’ can be traced back to the Babylonians and Ancient Egyptians. It can be found in the teachings of Buddhism and Christianity.

It gained popularity in our modern era by the occultist Helena Blavatsky in her book ‘The Secret Doctrine‘ and then the even more modern, and successful book ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Bryne, and then another famous book by Napoleon Hill called “Think and Grow Rich’ and many, many more books. Through the teachings in these book people were instructed to change their thoughts, ‘what you think you create’ as if people are born with magical powers. Also, we learned about vision boards and meditative techniques to attract what we want.

But, I have questions: do people really have the powers of manifestation or is everything simply in the cards, already pre-determined by fate?

Also, If the law of attraction is real than why do horrible things happen to happy, positive people?

One thing is for sure, the only people who truly prospered from the law of attraction were those who wrote books about it 😉

Ναός της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής/Church of the ‘Life giving fountain’

The church of ‘Zoodóchou Pigís’ or ‘Life giving fountain’ in English is built over a cave. It is located in Kefalari, Argolis in the Peloponnese.

It has a long and fascinating history. It was built in 1634 A.D close to where the icon of the Virgin Mary was found. However, in May 18, 1918 the church was destroyed when ammunition stored in military depots nearby exploded. The explosion was so powerful that 45 people lost their lives. The church that we see today was completed in 1928.

During the Nazi occupation of Greece the Nazis wanted to use the church to build an anti-aircraft artillery on the roof of the church. However, after the intervention of the priest Constantinos Papadimitriou to the German commander Dassinger, the construction of the artillery was prevented.

The cave was even used as a secret school to educate Greek children during the Ottoman empire.

Η εκκλησία της Ζωοδόχου Πηγής είναι χτισμένη πάνω από μια σπηλιά. Βρίσκεται στο Κεφαλάρι Αργολίδας στην Πελοπόννησο.

Έχει μια μακρά και συναρπαστική ιστορία. Χτίστηκε το 1634 μ.Χ. κοντά στο σημείο που βρέθηκε η εικόνα της Παναγίας. Ωστόσο, στις 18 Μαΐου 1918 η εκκλησία καταστράφηκε όταν πυρομαχικά που ήταν αποθηκευμένα σε στρατιωτικές αποθήκες κοντά εξερράγησαν. Η έκρηξη ήταν τόσο ισχυρή που 45 άνθρωποι έχασαν τη ζωή τους. Η εκκλησία που βλέπουμε σήμερα ολοκληρώθηκε το 1928.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της ναζιστικής κατοχής στην Ελλάδα οι Ναζί ήθελαν να χρησιμοποιήσουν την εκκλησία για να κατασκευάσουν ένα αντιαεροπορικό πυροβολικό στην οροφή της εκκλησίας. Ωστόσο, μετά από παρέμβαση του ιερέα Κωνσταντίνου Παπαδημητρίου στον Γερμανό διοικητή Ντασίντζερ, η κατασκευή του πυροβολικού αποτράπηκε.

Το σπήλαιο χρησιμοποιήθηκε ως κρυφό σχολειό για την εκπαίδευση των Ελλήνων κατά την Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία.

Arvanitia Beach/Παραλία Αρβανιτιά

After a day of strolling through the cobble stone streets of Nafplio a dip in cool waters was a must. Nearby Nafplio is ‘Arvanitia beach’. It is a short, small beach with lots of rocks and fish that love to bite swimmers feet. Plenty of screams were heard that day. At least it wasn’t a shark. Luckily I got out before the waters got choppy and too rough for even the best swimmers to swim in.

Μετά από μια μέρα βόλτας στα πλακόστρωτα δρομάκια του Ναυπλίου μια βουτιά σε δροσερά νερά ήταν απαραίτητη. Κοντά στο Ναύπλιο βρίσκεται η «παραλία Αρβανιτιάς». Είναι μια μικρή, μικρή παραλία με πολλά βράχια και ψάρια που λατρεύουν να δαγκώνουν τα πόδια των κολυμβητών. Ακούστηκαν πολλές κραυγές εκείνη τη μέρα, καλά, τουλάχιστον δεν ήταν καρχαρίας! Ευτυχώς, βγήκα πριν τα νερά ταραγούν και ήταν πολύ τραχιά για να κολυμπήσουν ακόμη και οι καλύτεροι κολυμβητές.
